Hiking in Red Rock Canyon

Steph and I have a goal of hiking all the trails in Red Rock before our annual pass expires...we hope to hike most of them this spring.

Thursday we went on our 2nd hike of this goal.
We decided  to hike  Keystone Thrust.
Right at the start the trail we  hit a dry stream bed.

So up the stream bed we did go.

It was very interesting and beautiful.
About 45 minutes   into our hike we noticed a hiker up on the ridge above us.   So we scrambled up to discover what was probably the real trail...but we could tell that plenty of other hikers had also taken the more scenic stream bed.  This trail could have been called name the "lone and dreary world."   We continued on... thinking we should be coming to the end of the trail and what the map had called the "most significant geological feature in Red Rock canyon". But we weren't seeing anything that could be called the Keystone Thrust or anything particularly geologically significant.
Just takin' a break.

So on we hiked.   When we'd been trekking a little more than an hour we met some hikers coming the other direction.   We asked them how much farther to the end...they looked at us kind of funny and said they were coming from a trail head and they wanted to know  how much further they had to go.   We finally pull the map out of Steph's backpack and discovered we were not on the trail we intended to hike (note to self...check map sooner) and we really weren't too far where this trail ended which was at a trail head... but not where our car was parked.  So figured we'd better turn around and hike back the way we'd come.   Which now was mostly downhill :)   Then we came to these two trail markers that we miss by taking the stream bed route

and where we'd gone wrong...

But maybe not so wrong...the dry stream bed was beautiful and we totally enjoyed our whole hike.  Next week's hike...Keystone thrust...the right way.

When you point it out like that, it makes up look like fools for not knowing where to go!
