Scout Craft

Since Karl's Adventurer scouts have a back packing
 trip up Mt. Charleston
planned he's been focusing on hiking equipment lately.
Last night he was making a sample soda-can stove.
He made them years ago when he worked with the scouts in Pasco.
Thanks to memory and a you-tube video...

 ...here's his sample stove.
A couple more practice runs to fine tune it
and he'll be ready to make them with his scouts.

And he now has a new reason to drink another soda
...diet of course.

Summer afternoon at Grampa's

After some stampin' up...it's time for a snack.
 More please...
You want me to whistle?
Who needs expensive toys when you have a tub of water
 ...rocks
 ...and empty jugs.
Here Grampa...have a drink.
Tricked ya'!
Just gettin' down to the bare necessities of life.

The things we do and call it recreation

I hiked Griffith peak this morning.
3rd highest mountain in southern Nevada.
 Elevation 11,060 ft
9.7-mile round-trip hike that climbs about 3,400 vertical-feet

Highest peak - Mt. Charleston, Next highest to the far left - Griffith peak.
One of the Young Women needed to make up this "require"  training hike to be able to go on the 4th year  back pack hike  so her mom ask if I would go with them.  Perfect...I've been wanting to do this hike for several years...I just needed the right excuse to burn up 8 hour hiking .  Then I invited Sarah Jane to go with us.  Crazy girl..she was so game to go with us...even though she had to be to work by 1:30pm.
I'm so glad there are crazy people. It makes life so much more fun.

Knowing we would be slow hiking up we were on the trail  by 5:45 am.

This was one of the most beautiful hikes I've been one.
The wildflowers were amazing.

The attitude was bothering Tiffany so she decide to wait in a meadow while we climbed the last mile and steepest part of the hike.
The last leg of the journey.   The top is in sight.
While Raelynn signed the register at the top
Sarah Jane ate the best PB and J she'd ever eaten
 I took photos.
I felt like I was on top of the world.
You could see Las Vegas to the Southwest.  Red Rock to the South.  Pahrump to the west. and to the North you were eye level with the top of Mt. Charleston.

Sarah running down the trail.  I clipped right along with a set of hiking poles
...I am totally sold on hiking with poles.
Tiffany decided not to wait for us and headed back down...so she go alittle slower.
But she didn't go slow...She booked it.
We didn't catch up to her until the parking lot.
Hike to the top...4 hours and 19 minutes.   We were so slow!
Hike down... 2 hours and 40 minutes.
And the  last mile I was hobbling like an old lady
...wait...I am an old lady!

And Sarah Jane...She had 10 minutes to get changed and into work.
But it was soooo worth it!
