I just got back from spending 5 days at Girl's Camp!
We got back from Florida on Tuesday the 8th and I spent a quick week doing laundry...finishing the last minutes prep on food for Girls camp and packing gear. Monday I worked 9 1/2 hours at the Bosch store, finished my packing and headed up to camp 7:00 am Tuesday. I was our camp cook. Or at least I was the camp food/cooking coordinator...the girls are suppose to do the actual cooking. But it would have been easier to do it myself then getting the girls to do it...truly like herding cats!
Wednesday, just when I was walking back into camp from a 6 mile hike with the 2nd year girls, it started raining s. By the time we got to our camp the all the girls were scrambling for shovels. They were learning the value of good trenches around their tents. Tuesday when we set up camp they had dug some feeble assemblances of trenches around their tents... in someplaces 2-3 feet away from their tents. So when it started to pour and water started running through their tents... they were out in the down pour digging real trenches trying to divert these little rivers that were threatening their sleeping bags. They also learn why a rain pouch was on their gear list! But by the time they learned that... they were already soaked. But by evening clouds parted and camp life was good again.
Thursday, just as that 3rd year hikers were walking in it started to rain again, then pour and then hail. We just had to run for the tents. Seven girls and two of us leaders sought shelter in the supply tent... Nothing to do but talk, eat snacks (it was the supply tent) sitting on tubs, buckets and bags of charcoal...and listen the hail and then more rain.
By evening we were soaked, one of our tents hadn't fared well and the thought of abandoning camp and heading back home sounded really good... but we endured! One leader drove back to Vegas ( thank goodness camp was only 30 minutes away) to get dry sleeping bags for a few girls and dry clothes for all the girls. Karl and another member of the Bishopric were scheduled to come up that evening. They got a good fire going for us...a warm fire, dry clothes, smores and life was good again.
Friday, just as the 1st year hikers were headed back to camp it started to cloud up again...by this time we were paraniod! But the clouds past us by...Thank goodness! Karl came up again with the Bishopric and made dutch oven cobblers for us. He also came up Saturday morning to help us pack up. haul it down the mountain, to sort, clean and dry tents and stow the gear...until next year!
By the time I had a shower, a nap and got my gear wash and put away, the soggy and unpleasant memories had faded and Girls Camp this year was pretty fun!
Yes...I'm still the Stake Relief Society President... Tomorrow is another Ward Conference so I better get my talk ready. Karl is also talking in church tomorrow but since I will be in another ward I will miss it. Crazy busy!
Karl ran...I walked and chatted the whole way.
Karl did the 5K at 27:42 min. (I'll save you the math...that's an 8.8 min. mile) and is wishing he'd kept going and done the 10K. I just had a good time, maybe next year I'll slog it. 
Karl's bluegrass band has played for the previous two years. But this year new people were in charge...no live band...just CD playing. And then there was a little skit commerating the pioneers. 
Karl was in the skit, but he was disappointed that they didn't have the bluegrass band play. Oh well, I'm sure the pioneers had some discontentment in camp also!
The ground is so poor and so hard we decided to try "Grow Boxes" and self watering pots. Our lot is so small that the grow boxes are kind of in the middle of the lawn. The apricots on the tree in the back will be ripe in about a week.
