Treasure hunting

Soon after we moved to Las Vegas and attempted to garden in this  parched desert of rock-hard alkaline soil...Karl decided he needed a composter.  Really?   With our micro-yard?   I tried to use all the logic that I had...but I must of lost because a  composter showed up on our doorstep shortly there after.
We faithfully fill it with grass clippings, kitchen scraps, garden pruning and leaves.
We not-so-faithfully spin it.
And we occasionally empty it of what the Master Gardeners call "pure gold"
...looks like course dirt to me.
But it IS  full of treasures.

So whenever Karl plants a new bush or plant he digs a larger than needed hole...fills the hole with his "golden" compost.   The transplanted plants do okay...but all the volunteer seedlings that come up do great.
Normal rational people would just pluck these little invaders out like weeds.
Not us...not here in desolate Vegas.
If it's green and growing... we don't have the heart to kill it.

Hence.. you can't see the bougainvillea for the cantaloupe and tomatoes.

And this transplanted bush is suffering from sunburn but the cantaloupe are lovin' it.
Then the other day Karl found these...

Cantaloupes the size of soft balls hanging in the oleander bush....

Ahhh ...hidden treasures.

Yum! We love cantalope.

So, we are going to be coming to Vegas for a month-long rotation at UNSOM from mid-October to mid-November and we wondered if you might be able to give us some pointers on good/bad areas to settle down for a month. I think Michael's going to be rotating in North Las Vegas?? Still not 100% on that one, but if you have any ideas, we'd appreciate any help we can get. If you can, email me back: anita.draney@gmail.com. Thanks!! :)
